Useful NREMT Study Tips

Just to expand on the NREMT study aids page, I decided to offer some useful study tips to maximize your time and effectiveness when preparing for the NREMT exam.

You need to be prepared for any and all types of questions since you wont have the opportunity to review the entire exam, and the test won’t let you skip questions you don’t know. One tip is to use the piece of paper they give you for writing down anything you want to remember, or have just studied while it’s fresh your mind. A great example would be the list of drug names, or perhaps drug drip formulas, the Parkland Burn formula, or the Rule of Nines for burns, etc. Try to get as much info as you want written down prior to starting the test since you won’t be able to go overtime.

Another great tip is to make sure you read the questions carefully and thoroughly – don’t just quickly answer the question because it kind of looks like one you went over in your practice exams. Sometimes test questions can be deceiving because they include language like “the most”, “the least of”, “everything except”, and many other variations. Make sure you understand exactly what the question refers to, and if needed read it aloud or repeat it to yourself.

After reading through questions carefully, use a process of elimination by crossing out as many answers you know are incorrect. There may be some ambiguity when performing this step because there may be some level of accuracy for more than one answer, and you need to select the “best” among them. For instance, a test question may ask something along these lines:

You arrive at the scene of a house fire with your partner. Upon arrival there is a person lying down in the front yard with an apparent injury and there are multiple bystanders gathering in the street. What is your first course of action?

A) Provide assistance to the person
B) Secure the scene using safety tape around the perimeter of the yard
C) Wait for firefighters to arrive
D) Call for additional help

As you can see, there is some merit to several of these questions, and picking the correct answer may be difficult. These questions should be answered with care, and you should simply choose the best answer according to your EMT training, practice tests and other preparation materials.

Lastly, be cognizant of questions that have treatment options as answers, including treatments that are “least invasive”. When learning how to become an EMT, many students gain knowledge on a wide variety of advanced life saving procedures, and they have a tendency of wanting to display their knowledge of those procedures. Be sure not to answer “Assist Ventilations With High Flow O2″ on patients with low oxygen saturation when “Provide O2 via a Non-Rebreather” is a choice. The majority of the time, the least invasive treatment is always the best answer.

Effectively preparing for the NREMT exam will give you the confidence you need to perform at your best. Be sure to schedule regular study time throughout your training, and be sure to use a wide variety of study tools and aids in order to maximize your retention of the material.
